The first halfpipe in Grindelwald was built in the winter of 1989 at Männlichen. This was initiated by the Snowboard Club and took several weeks of shovelling two snow hills. The walls were up to 150 cm high, and the transition had quite nasty edges and steps. No wonder we were happy when the Grindelwald First mountain railway in 1993 created a Pipe Dragon and built a permanent half-pipe above the Schreckfeld station. Increasing snowboarder skills, however, increased the demands on a half-pipe, so in 1998 the half-pipe was converted into a superpipe. This has a larger radius and allows smoother pipe riding and higher airs.
Due to the large masses of snow that the construction of a half-pipe requires, an existing terrain recess was sculpted on Oberjoch. Through the preformed earth displacement, the pipe can be built with less snow. This saves resources such as water and electricity for artificial snow as well as machine hours, and it allows for an earlier start to the season.
